Justice Oputa Passes On At 96

Eminent jurist and a former  Justice of the Supreme Court (JSC), Justice Chukwudifu Oputa is dead. The legal icon was said to have  died yesterday afternoon at the National Hospital in Abuja at the age of 96.

Justice Oputa, who would have been 96 in August, according to one of his sons, Geoffrey Oputa, suffered a relapse of the stroke he had in February this year and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The late Justice Oputa was born on August 22, 1924 in Oguta, Imo State. He had his early education at the Sacred Heart School, Oguta and Christ the King College, Onitsha.

Chibok Girls: Falana declines to serve on Presidential Committee



Lagos lawyer and human rights activist, Barrister Femi Falana (SAN), has declined to serve in the Presidential Committee set up on abducted girls of the Government College Chibok, Borno State.

Falana revealed this in a chat with Sunday Mirror yesterday night, hinging his rejection to serve on the committee not only on his involved in the ongoing nationwide demonstrations in which protesters are demanding for the immediate release of the abducted girls from the custody of the Boko Haram sect but that a Committee of Concerned Nigerians working with the parents of the abducted girls had engaged his services to seek legal redress with a view to compelling the Federal Government to discharge its duty to the victims of the crime against humanity.

Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Friday night practically took over investigation into the case of girls who were abducted from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, on April 15.

While President Goodluck Jonathan, was setting up a fact-finding committee on the matter, she was presiding over a five-hour marathon meeting with some stakeholders.

While adjourning the meeting to Sunday, the President’s wife summoned some individuals which she believed would assist in unraveling the circumstances leading to the girls’ abduction and their whereabouts.

Nigeria Police confirm 12 dead, 19 injured

The Nigeria police said 12 persons died following an explosion that rocked Nyanya, on the outskirt of Abuja, on Thursday.
The spokesman of the police, Frank Mba, told journalists at the scene of the incident that 19 others were injured and were now receiving treatment at the various hospitals in the city.
Mr. Mba, who described the casualty figure as “provisional” said that investigation into the explosion had already commenced.
Already, top security officials had visited the scene of the explosion to assess the situation.
Among those who visited scene were the Commander-General of Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, Olu Abolurin, the Police DIG Operations, Mike Zoukumor, Commander Guards Brigade and the FCT Director, State Security Service.
